Development of a phospholipid nanoparticle and small molecule-based combination drug for the treatment of lethal sepsis - project summary sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to an infection. An estimated 1.7 million adults are affected by sepsis, and 350,000 among them succumb to IT every year in the US alone. Currently, there are no fda-approved drugs for treating sepsis since previous clinical trials proved unsuccessful. Conventional antibiotic treatment is still one of the mainstays in the management of sepsis, and a large number of resources are being pumped into the development of new antibiotics. However, the ever- increasing antibiotic resistance of bacteria poses serious concerns. Hence, there is a critical unmet need for a treatment of sepsis that does not rely on the use of antibiotics. To this end, vivacelle bio inc (vbi) is developing vbi-optimum (vbi-o), an innovative combination of a phospholipid nanoparticle colloid (pnc) with ETHYL-3- hydroxybutyrate (ehb), to treat septic shock by modulating macrophage function and inflammatory signaling. Physicians will be able to prescribe vbi-o, and the administration of the drug will be via a simple injection into the abdominal cavity along with antibiotics as opposed to intravenous antibiotics alone. In this SBIR Phase II, vbi will further develop and validate the optimum c ...

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs set aside part of federal research budgets for small companies. Agencies award them in phases: Phase I tests whether an idea is feasible, Phase II funds development, and Phase III is follow-on work paid for outside the set-aside. STTR awards also require a research institution as a partner.
Every figure on this page is taken from the award's own federal record, linked beside it, as it stood when the page was built: the recipient, its address, the awarding agency and office, the amount obligated so far, the dates and the description. Phase and program are shown as the award's own description states them. The amount can grow later if the agency adds funding to the same award.
