Source Check
Cited due diligence, settled against named registers.
What was not checked
Stated here, before the findings, rather than buried under them.
- It cannot confirm a job title that no register records. Most titles at private companies are not registered anywhere.
- It cannot settle seniority, competence, or whether someone is good at the job.
- It cannot read a register that charges per lookup on your behalf, and says so rather than guessing.
- Absence from a register is absence from that register. It is not evidence the person is not real.
Who it is for
Editors, producers and fact-checkers deciding whether to put a named source in print, and anyone who has been handed a bio and needs the claims in it settled before they repeat them.
The registers that settle it
| Register | What it settles |
|---|---|
| NPI Registry (CMS NPPES) | Whether a clinician holds an active National Provider Identifier, and the specialty and state it is registered under. |
| OIG List of Excluded Individuals and Entities | Whether the named person appears on the federal exclusions register. |
| FINRA BrokerCheck | Whether a person claiming a brokerage role holds a record with that firm. |
| SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure | Whether an adviser claim corresponds to a filed adviser record. |
| SEC EDGAR | Whether a claimed officer or company role appears in filings of record. |
| CourtListener | Whether the name appears in federal and state dockets of record. |
| ORCID | Whether a claimed research identity resolves to a registered researcher record. |
| General Medical Council register | Whether a doctor practising in the United Kingdom appears on the register. |
What a real run returned
Subject: a clinician claim naming an employer and an NPI (SC-20260808-F31E78)
Verdict: could_not_verify
3 claims extracted, 8 register checks performed, 7 recorded as not checked. NPI Registry: not found. OIG exclusions: confirmed clear. Employer's own website: confirmed. The report states the subject does not read as fully verified and lists every check performed with its exact search, so the reader can finish the rest.
The ceiling
The strongest thing this check will say about a person is partially verified. It will not clear someone, and it will not tell you a person is fake — a register that has no record of a name has no record of that name, which is a different statement from the person not existing.
