Canoo went public via a SPAC merger with Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp. IV, valuing the company at $2.4 billion.79 The SPAC deal gave Canoo access to $600 million to help produce and launch its first commercial vehicle by 2022.7 In October 2023, Canoo announced an agreement to raise $45 million through a sale of convertible preferred stock to an unnamed foreign strategic institutional investor.10 The same investor could provide up to $150 million in additional investments.10 Canoo received $100 million in state incentives to build its Oklahoma production facility.6 In its bankruptcy filing, Canoo reported liabilities of more than $164 million against assets of $126 million.2 According to the Chapter 7 filing, Canoo owed money to fewer than 49 creditors, with liabilities ranging from $10 million to $50 million, and had only $50,000 in assets.6 Canoo's net losses in 2023 totaled just over $300 million.3 Canoo burned over $1 billion in its short existence.6

What happened

Canoo was founded in 2017 as Evelozcity by two former BMW executives.17 In 2019, Canoo revealed the Lifestyle Vehicle, a seven-seat passenger van with a bubbly look, planned to be offered via a subscription service in 2021.1 Canoo's design used a skateboard platform that placed electric powertrain components on a flatbed with wheels underneath.7 In 2020, Canoo pivoted to commercial vehicles, unveiling the MPDV (Multi-Purpose Delivery Vehicle) promised for 2022.1 In 2020, Hyundai Motor Group announced a partnership with Canoo to use its skateboard style for future EVs, but the plans never came to fruition.1

In August 2020, Canoo announced plans to go public via a SPAC merger with Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp. The handful of Canoo vehicles built over the past few years were likely closer to pre-production prototypes than final production vehicles.1 Canoo's test vehicles will remain the only Canoos to ever grace American roads.1 Canoo's employees were laid off, with almost a quarter of staff cut in November 2024.3 Canoo shut down its Oklahoma facility and furloughed workers just weeks before filing for bankruptcy.6
